Profile David Beckham

Personal information
Full name David Robert Joseph Beckham
Date of birth 2 May 1975 (age 37)
Place of birth Leytonstone, London, England
Height 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m)[1]
Playing position Midfielder
Club information
Current club Paris Saint-Germain
Number 32

One of the most recognisable sportsmen on the planet, Beckham has enjoyed the spotlight since making his Premier League debut for Manchester United in 1995. Cast as both hero and villain during his career, he was taunted and abused after being sent off against Argentina in 1998, but won back the public's affection and rose to captain his country.

Emerging through the youth ranks at Old Trafford, Beckham quickly confirmed his potential as a superstar with his dazzling range of passing skills and deadly free-kick ability. Establishing himself on the right side of midfield, he won six league titles and two FA Cups during his time in England, while he was also part of the famous treble winning side of 1999.

His role as World Cup villain saw his face his toughest challenge, but gaining the armband and sealing qualification to the 2002 event with a last-gasp free-kick against Greece he overcame his demons and played a pivotal role in the following years.

A £25 million move to Real Madrid in 2003 confirmed his status as one of the best players in the world, but it was not his happiest time and he only picked up the La Liga title in his last year. Choosing to move to the MLS with the L.A. Galaxy in 2007, Beckham became a figurehead for American soccer, but caused controversy when he decided to join AC Milan on loan during the off-season. Picking up an achilles injury a few months before the 2010 World Cup, he suffered heartache again in his career and missed out.

However, upon his return Beckham helped the Galaxy to their second successive Western Conference title and first MLS Supporters' Shield since 2002. In November 2011, he joined an elite group of players to have won three league titles in three different countries, when the Galaxy won their third MLS Cup against Houston Dynamo. A feat which he repeated again the following season.

Despite having signed a new two-year deal in January 2012, Beckham chose to end his association with the club at the end of the year and sought a new challenge in 2013, signing for PSG.

Strengths:
An incredible crosser of the ball, Beckham has the ability to put the ball where he wants it and creates numerous scoring chances with his vision. He also boasts one of the deadliest free-kicks in the business.

Weaknesses:
A lack of pace has hindered his impact somewhat at the highest level, but Beckham's real weakness is a hot-headed temperament which has seen him sent off for petulance in the past.

Career high:
Captaining England and sealing their progress to the 2002 World Cup with a last-minute free-kick winner against Greece.

Career low:
Being sent off for flicking out at Argentina's Diego Simeone at the 1998 World Cup and consequently becoming the subject of a nation's abuse for his behaviour. Missing out on the 2010 World Cup through injury was also a crushing blow.

Style:
Hard working, unselfish, inspirational and a real team player.

Quotes:
"The spotlight will always be on me, but it's something I'm learning to live with as the years go by." David Beckham, April 2009.

Trivia:
Beckham holds the English appearance record for an outfield player, beating Bobby Moore's haul of 108 caps when he played against Slovakia in March 2009.

Profile Nemanja Vidic

Name : Nemanja Vidic
Squad No: 15
Position: Defender
Age: 31
Birth Date: Oct 21, 1981
Birth Place: Uzice, Yugoslavia
Height: 6' 1'' (1.85m)
Weight: 185 lbs (83.8 kg)

virtual unknown before moving to Manchester United from Spartak Moscow in January 2006, Vidic is now considered to be one of the best defenders in the world. His partnership with Rio Ferdinand has formed a rock at the centre of the Red Devils' defence for several years.

Vidic began his career with Red Star Belgrade, and was soon made the club's skipper. Even at that stage he had shown his ability to be a goalscoring defender, notching 12 in 67 games for his club. After winning the Serbia and Montenegro double in 2004 he moved to Russia with Spartak. Two years later he was signed by United for £7 million.

His United career started slowly with some critics wondering if he had the quality to adapt to life in the Premier League. But in 2006-07 he was one of the best players in the English top flight and has rarely suffered a drop in form since then, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Vidic has represented several sides internationally due to the break up of the old Yugoslavia. He played youth international football for Yugoslavia before going on to play for Serbia & Montenegro and then Serbia. He was part of the hugely impressive Serbia & Montenegro defence dubbed the "famous four" (Mladen Krstajic, Ivica Dragutinovic and Goran Gavrancic being the others).

That back four conceded just one goal in the 2006 World Cup qualification campaign but, sadly, Vidic he did not feature for a single minute at those finals in Germany, kept on the sidelines by suspension and an ill-timed knee ligament injury.

He has established himself in the world-class category since arriving at Old Trafford from Spartak Moscow in the January 2006 transfer window. He did not put a foot wrong for the Serbs in 2010 World Cup qualification, prompting coach Antic to shower him with praise: "He's not so much a rock as a mountain range.

In 2010, amid reported overtures from Real Madrid, Vidic pledged his long-term future to United by penning a five-year deal and was made captain by Sir Alex Ferguson as a reward for his on-pitch influence and his loyalty.

Such were Vidic's leadership qualities, he was made the club's skipper, replacing Gary Neville. After lifting the title with United in 2011, the Serbian was dealt a huge blow when he was ruled out for the remainder of the season after twisting his knee during a Champions League clash at Basel.

Vidic returned in the summer of 2012, but suffered a fitness setback in Septmeber when he was forced to undergo surgery on the same knee he injured in 2011.

Strengths:
Strong and powerful, good in the air and a weapon from set-pieces at the opposite end.

Weaknesses:
Has been known to struggle with the ball played over the top, also short on pace.

Career high:
Winning the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008.

Career low:
Missing out on playing at the 2006 World Cup finals initially through suspension and then an injury picked up in training.

Style:
Aggressive and imposing, Vidic is a no-nonsense central defender who leads the back-line superbly.

Quotes:
"Nemanja was magnificent. It was the best performance you are likely to see from a natural centre-half. His reading of the game is excellent and he is as tough as nails. He was absolutely superb." Sir Alex Ferguson, after victory over Wigan in January 2009.

Trivia:
United fans have a song where they sing that Vidic will "murder you". Vidic said of this: "I know the words. I want to win and do my best no matter what. I really thank them for their support - but I am not a killer."

Profile Gianluigi Buffon

Quick Facts:
Name: Gianluigi Buffon
Nationality: Italian
Date and Place of Birth: January 28, 1978 in Carrara, Italy
Position: Goalkeeper
Current Club: Juventus (Serie A)
Previous Club: Parma (1995-2001)
International Career: 1997 to present

The position of goalkeeper is the loneliest on the field, with long spells of inactivity. But when Gianluigi Buffon is bored, he can at least reflect on the multitude of individual and team honors he has won since making his debut as a 17-year-old for Parma.

The likeable Juventus and Italy custodian is one of the best goalkeepers of his generation and humble to go with it. Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year on no fewer than eight occasions, he and Real Madrid's Iker Casillas stand together as arguably the best in their position since the turn of the century, both blessed with that ability to make a key save when otherwise unemployed.

The Early Years:

After joining Parma at the age of 13 and appearing for the club's youth sides, Buffon made his debut in November 2009 - a 0-0 draw against AC Milan.

Buffon went on to play 168 matches in six seasons at the Ennio Tardini, winning an Italian Cup, Italian Super Cup and the UEFA Cup.

Playing behind such stalwarts as Fabio Cannavaro and Lilian Thuram in the days when Parma spent lavishly on some of the world's finest players, the club regularly finished in the upper echelons of Serie A. A second place finish and Champions League qualification under Carlo Ancelotti in 1997 was a memorable achievement for the modest outfit from Emilia-Romagna.
Most Expensive Goalkeeper:

The Bianconeri swooped for Buffon when they paid a world record US$46.8 million fee for a goalkeeper in 2001.

Many thought the price excessive when such fees were mainly being paid only for the best attacking talent, but Buffon's subsequent performances silenced the doubters and over a decade on, the move looks a smart piece of business on Juve's part.

He has helped the Old Lady to five Serie A titles and even stayed at the club when they were relegated for their part in the Calciopoli corruption scandal that rocked Italian soccer.
International Career:

Buffon made his international debut in freezing cold Russia in the heart of winter. He was 19 when introduced as a replacement for the injured Gianluca Pagliuca in a 1998 World Cup play-off.

He was an unused substitute at the finals and a broken hand meant that he played no part at Euro 2000. Buffon was the number one goalkeeper at the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004 but Italy failed to make a real impact in either competition.

The pinnacle of Buffon's international career was the 2006 World Cup which Italy won in Germany. He conceded just two goals in the tournament as the Azzurri triumphed on penalties after a 1-1 draw with France in the final.

Buffon helped Italy to the quarter-finals at Euro 2008 as he took over the captaincy due to Cannavaro's absence through injury, but only played one match at the 2010 World Cup after a problem with his sciatic nerve. Italy failed to make it out of their group.

Profile Sergio Kun Aguero

Full Name: Sergio Aguero
Squad No: 10
Position: Forward
Age: 24
Birth Date: Jun 2, 1988
Birth Place: Quilmes, Argentina
Height: 5' 7'' (1.70m)
Weight: 69 kg

One of the world's most highly-rated strikers, Aguero draws obvious comparisons with father-in-law Diego Maradona.

At the age of nine he joined Independiente, the team he always supported, after showing great promise in several small-town teams such as Loma Alegre and Los Primos. A few years later, but much earlier than expected, he would fulfil another dream: making his debut in the top division. He was 15 years, one month and three days old when Oscar Ruggeri, by then Independiente's coach, sent him on as a replacement for Emanuel Rivas with 21 minutes left in a game against San Lorenzo.

Thus, Aguero broke Maradona's record and became the youngest footballer to play an official game in the Argentine top division. Even though seven months would go by before he would start a game with the team, Aguero had already showed great promise and appeared to be the new icon of Argentine football.

By 2005, the offers from Europe started arriving and he was transferred to Atletico Madrid for around 23 million euros. Aguero has proved his class with consistent displays at Atletico since his arrival in Spain. His partnership with Uruguay's Diego Forlan has been dynamite for the capital city club, with his pace, power and finishing ability making him a real handful for any defender.

However, his love affair with the club came to an end in June 2011 when he asked for a transfer and joined Manchester City the following month for a fee of around £39 million.

Strengths:
His ball control and powerful bursts make him almost unstoppable in the box. A fine finisher went presented with a chance, he has a capacity to create in the most difficult circumstances.

Weaknesses:
He sometimes lacks focus and can be selfish with the ball.

Career high:
Helping Atletico to win the 2010 Europa League with two assists in the final.

Career low:
Except on isolated occasions, he has not yet been able to shine with the national team.

Style:
Direct, strong, cool-headed, a bull of a striker.

Quotes:
Every era has its best soccer player and hopefully Aguero is the best of this. He is going through a very good time and when he has the ball at his feet there is the feeling that something will happen, and always good.' Does that sound like anyone familiar?'' Atletico president Enrique Cerezo, October 2008.

Trivia:
A cumbia band called Los Leales recorded a song with Sergio Aguero as the lead singer. The song was written in his honour and is called "El Kun Aguero".
